THOUGHTS
FOR
2006
To
reach for another is to risk involvement.
To expose your feeling is to
risk exposing
your true self. To place your
ideas, your dreams,
before a crowd, is to risk
their loss. To love is to risk
not being loved in return. To
live is to risk dying.
To hope is to risk despair. To
try is to risk failure.
But risk must be taken, because
the greatest hazard in
life is to risk nothing...They
may avoid suffering
and sorrow, but they cannot
learn, feel, change, grow,
love, live. Chained by their
attitudes, they are
a slave, they have forfeited
their freedom.
Only a person who risks is
free.

THE GOOD - GOODBYE
Dear Carole,
It is with mixed emotions that I read about you leaving the teaching aspect of your business. I am very happy for you knowing you can pursue whatever makes you happy and it is also sad to think about all the people who will not have the privilege of attending your class. You have had a profound influence on my life and career and I am most appreciative. I know the team now in charge is well-trained and will carry on the Carole Talbott name with pride.
You are not only a great teacher, but you are one of the most dynamic people I have ever met. Thank you for all you have done for me.

WE SAVED THE BEST

FOR CAROLE'S LAST CLASS!
Visual Coordination Certification Course
Through the “eyes” of a student
Day One
Wow! I loved going into a client’s home on the first day of training and observing Carole and Joanna while they worked their magic. It was fascinating to watch Carole calmly consider the possibilities for the transformation of the room. Does she wiggle her nose?
The client’s furniture and other treasured objects that initially appeared awkward or completely invisible were gently guided into place by the “dream team”. The humble VC’s to be were dazzled by the dramatic results. How do these women take a home that some described as “cold”, “chaotic” and “frightening”, and turn it into a warm, inviting refuge? Further, how could this possibly be accomplished in less than two hours and without adding or deleting a single piece? Where’s the agony?
I’m sure these questions and more will be addressed in due time…perhaps during day two? I know nothing. I am a sponge ready to absorb more.
Thanks for an inspiring first day.
Day Two
Carole explained that learning the formula was going to remind us of kindergarten. Yippee! We’re going to put a puzzle together, sort of. We’re given a puzzle piece to remind us to take one step at a time.
We begin by identifying basic room shapes and determining where the furniture would be placed based on a square or angle pattern. We’re told square rooms equal angled furniture 98 percent of the time. Certainly my pesky den falls in the rare 2% of the rooms that should be squared. Mother Carole senses a wandering mind and assures us the formula will be proven in the field.
Joanna covers the subject of hanging art, which happens to be my greatest fear in Visual Coordinations. We’re shown photos of perfectly placed plates and framed art. How will Joanna fit into my toolbox? Note, negotiate plan to share Joanna’s talent/locate handled ladder.
After lunch we’re given cookies and milk. We learn more stuff. My head is filled with peaks and valleys. My mantra is size, shape, color and theme. Can this be applied when shopping for shoes? A field trip to Tootsies this afternoon is in order. I like kindergarten.
Day Three
Day three was about “no thinking, just doing”. I needed to get out of my head and into my gut. Why is simplicity so damn hard sometimes?
There were also themes of trusting the formula and facing some of my fears. It is challenging for me to stay in the process and not “think” about the what-ifs (not to be confused with the what nots).
Joanna helped me tackle my fear of hanging art. I was proud of my self for learning to measure accurately and use a level. I’m so excited about assembling a toolbox now. Maybe I won’t have to jam Joanna in among the tools after all.
Last, the proof is in the pudding. Actually the proof was in the homes and the client’s faces.
I’m tired on the trip back to the hotel. The group gets a small break from my bantering. Sometimes you just need to be still and absorb…I am a sponge.
Day Four
Day four took us to a home that looked like it could take days to complete. Lots of art, mollies in every single spot where a picture hung, an odd-shaped table set in a funky position, with an off-center light fixture. I’m pretty sure the formula is telling me to turn and run. Then, I think about the “super VC girls here to save the day”!
Carole directs us to divide and conquer the rooms one step at a time. I’m starting to listen more to my gut, but can wander into thinking about scenarios that don’t work well.
For the first time, I saw a glimpse of Carole getting frustrated with a small area of the kitchen where the dining table stood. The wheels turned, the nose wiggled? I’m still pondering the possibility of super natural powers. Then she shifted a chair, filled an empty pocket and centered the table where it should be for now. Those pesky builders and contractors need directions when placing light fixtures and plugs!
I begin to feel more comfortable coordinating “our” room. I learn more about hanging art from the Queen of the toolbox, Joanna.
Graduation and Hurricane Wilma are approaching. Two perfect storms? I’m going to miss Camp Carole and the group of friends I’ve made this week. Thanks.
Day Five
It’s day five and we descend on Calico Corners for a lesson in fabric selection. I’m more comfortable trusting my instincts and following my gut reaction to a first fabric. Selecting coordinating fabrics is even easier. Carole produces a mirror and camera then begins to drape the fabrics around our shoulders. Each student passes the teacher’s “cheat test” by sparkling in their fabric wraps. Remember it’s about them (the client) not us. What a remarkable way to determine a person’s true passion for color and style.
We head back to the hotel for another feeding. I’m hoping to graduate with a hint of my waistline intact. The time has arrived to present the certificates. Carole begins to speak, then pauses to allow her tears to come. I’m honored to be a part of this moment with these incredible women. We were meant to be here with Miss Carole as she makes this transition. Let’s hope we make our teacher proud. Maybe we will find out at a reunion in Big Canoe?
I drive home through the beginning of Wilma’s rain. Sweet Kate and Randy give me a warm welcome. Kate is curious about Mamma’s decorating class so I ask her to find the focal point to the family room and draw it. I’ve enclosed my kindergarten girl’s rendering. Simple.
Thank you for the opportunity to be your student. I guess it’s time to find out if I learned anything by doing.

Dear Carole,
There are no words to express the great knowledge and enjoyment that I experienced at the Visual Coordination seminar this week. My purpose to attend your training was to leave with the powerful "formula" that I knew could be my answer to marketing my new business successfully. I left your seminar with a lot more than just the "formula". From day one, you became a true inspiration to me ... a success story that only a genuine person with determination and belief could write. I have great admiration for how you have made people's lives more beautiful through your natural talents. I am so thankful that at the age of forty you decided to do something with your gift. There is no doubt in my mind that the world is a much better place because of you.
For several reasons, I was very moved by your history and how Visual Coordination came to be. Just turning forty and starting a business that I know so little about has been a mental struggle for me since the conception of Interior Affairs. I've questioned myself daily as to WHY am I doing this at my age after a very successful career at Disney. I believe you confirmed the reason why I have taken this path less traveled ... I believe it is to make a difference in other people's lives, as well. I'm confident that I can help to change the lives of our customers by creating a beautiful environment for them to live in, this week taught me a lot about how a person can become "complete" through powerful and positive influences. If there is any positive influence I can have on such people, as you do, then I am doing what I'm suppose to do through my company. I only hope that I can one day look back on my adventurous climb to success and see my footsteps forever imprinted on the world ... hopefully a more beautiful one because I was there ... just as you have done.

“Visual
Coordination - as a new profession and
for the existing design Professional”
Visual Coordinations® is
not just for the frustrated homemaker, but for the professional
designer as well. Since interior design is a service business, Visual
Coordinations® is a perfect fit. And because the VC is formula has a
purely scientific base, the learning process is a simple one.
There are many people out there who really do have a knack for
decorating, and have no idea how to go about turning it into earning
power. The time and cost of formal training are usually not an option.
But enrolling in a five-day certification program in Visual
Coordinations® is. The program offers the creative person a great
opportunity to work for his or herself, and to help other.
For experienced interior designers, Visual Coordinations® adds an
exciting new layer to their education while rekindling their
creativity and expanding their ability to serve clients. It also
enables the designer to immediately identify the client’s taste in
order to enhance it, not change it. We have found that by integrating
Visual Coordinations® into a design business, sales increase. This
happens because the designer works with household treasures before
recommending new purchases, thereby gaining the confidence of the
client. By applying the VC formula, the designer knows exactly what to
add and where to place it. The guessing game is stopped dead in its
tracks. And the homemaker stays connected to the project throughout.
Even architects can benefit. Addressing the placement of interior
pieces not only enhances and amplifies their work but takes a lot of
the pressure of the design and move-in process. How often is the
architect blamed for designing a space that turns out to be unrelated
to the art of living? Visual Coordinations® can bridge the gap
between structure and interior design.
The Gift of
Visual Coordinations®
Most gratifying of all,
visual coordination can be used to help others in need. More and more
of us are discovering that giving a gift that improves the way we live
and changes the way we feel about ourselves and others is very
empowering. What better starting point to changing the world than
changing our home.

"AND ABOUT DECORATING FOR GOOD"...
Dear Carol -- I purchased your book for my son about a year ago, (knowing well that I would read and enjoy it) and borrowed it back from him last week.
He had moved to a new apartment in the fall, and finally last Thursday I went over to help him rearrange. (Pure motherly butting in!) He recently graduated from college, and has basic college-student type furniture, sound system, computer, etc; -- and a very small rabbit-warren of an apartment.
I was hopeful but didn't know what we could possibly manage. It was a great success! His furniture arrangement finally makes sense (your principles), his storage has been organized much more efficiently (grouping), there is much more open space, and he knows exactly what to shop for to fill in space I never would have believed he would have. (He needs one comfy chair to complete a pleasant corner for reading and conversation,
T.V, etc.) All with his rather motley collection of stuff!
And we both had a wonderful time. It was a satisfying, good day. Just wanted to let you know you contributed a lot with your book and design principles.
Thanks!

"Hi, my name is Jackie Lee, and I bought "Decorating for Good" two days ago at
the Vero Beach Book Center. I read it through, and that afternoon, redecorated my girls' 9X11
bedroom, which I had never been able to "feel" right about. Using your techniques and about 2 hours of time, I transformed it into a room that they had to chase their little brothers out of. Wow!
The next day, I did the same thing to the brothers' room. My problem was,
both rooms are relatively small, and I had the idea that if I left a lot of
open floor space in the middle of the room by lining furniture along the
side, that it would feel more spacious. Using your book, I reduced the
amount of floor space slightly, but the room feels much more comfortable. My next task was our 12x25 game room, w/10 foot ceilings, complete with a 7 ft sofa, TV hutch, dog crate, 2 computer desks, 3 spare monitors and a 6 ft diameter trampoline! Believe it or not, this room
looks great now too!
I've been "into" decorating for only 8 years now, and some rooms were
successes and some just never felt right. Your book gave me the explanation for why the "right"
rooms clicked so well. Thank you so much for a wonderful book! I rank it up there with Don Aslett's "Clutter's Last Stand," Richard
Swenson's "Margin," and the Bible, as the few books that have positively
changed my life!
Thanks again,
Jackie Lee

Hi. I REALLY stink at decorating. I would go into other peoples homes and think, "why can't my house look like that?"
I just read your Decorating For Good. My house looks awesome now. I purchased 2 new items for my home to the tune of $18. The rest was all my own. I can't believe it. Thanks for taking the mystery and complexity out of decorating!"
Thanks again,
